The Italian economy has many structural weaknesses, leading to low economic growth before recession and now to a very sluggish recovery. The government deficit is estimated to have been better than expected in 2010, and compares favourably to a number of other European countries.

After the further moderation of economic growth in the last quarter of 2010, the Italian economy started the year on a weak note as well. But both the manufacturing purchasing manager index and the rise in new orders point to better days ahead.

The sluggish economic recovery seems to have come to a halt in the last quarter of 2010. Export growth kept up well, but this has not been translated into higher industrial production. In all, the Italian economy had a rather weak close to 2010. With government austerity having started in January 2011, the start of this year probably has not been much stronger.
