Eurozone: waar is de vraag gebleven? (Dutch)

We verwachten dat de economie in de eurozone in 2019 met 1,3 procent groeit en in 2020 met 1,5 procent. De groei zal worden gedreven door de binnenlandse bestedingen. De belangrijkste risico’s blijven de Brexit en een verdere escalatie van de handelsspanningen tussen de VS en de EU.

Rente en valuta: zo plat als een pannenkoek (Dutch)

De ECB heeft de plannen om tegen het eind van de zomer de rente te verhogen laten varen. Dit betekent dat de geldmarktrentes nog langer negatief blijven. Wij verwachten zelfs de komende twee jaar geen renteverhoging meer: zo plat als een pannenkoek dus!

United States: Return of the US debt ceiling

After being suspended for about a year, the debt limit returned on March 2. However, the Treasury Department will take extraordinary measures that could delay a federal government default to September or October.

On 14 February another British Parliament vote on Brexit passed by without any change of course. PM May might take Brexit to the wire in order to prevent a large rupture of the Conservative Party and maintain pressure on various decision makers. 27 February looks like the next milestone.

President Trump declared a national emergency on the US-Mexico border that will allow him to divert funds to build the wall. The Democrats are likely to challenge this decision, bringing the country closer to a constitutional crisis.

The British Parliament rejected the EU-UK Brexit deal on 14 January in a historic defeat for the government. The vote was expected to be a unique opportunity to change the Brexit course, but instead it left us in the same uncertainty.

Japan: Economic recovery on the cards?

We expect the Japanese economy to recover moderately in the fourth quarter of 2018, and this will continue in the first quarter of 2019, but we do not foresee any surprises from the central bank in terms of policy changes. Inflation has not picked up yet, and risks remain tilted to the downside.
