The start of 2012 saw many Emerging European economies fall back into recession. Although the outlook for 2013 is somewhat less bleak, there is little reason for optimism. The region's proximity to the eurozone renders it vulnerable.

In 3Q12, economic growth slowed in many emerging markets, including China, Mexico and Poland. This triggered the IMF and others to revise their estimates downward. For China, the end of the slowdown seems in sight, but this is not the case for India.

Several emerging markets continue to experience a slowdown in growth. Growth in 12Q2 went down in both Russia and Turkey, while growth in China is likely to slow down further in Q3 as well. Meanwhile, industrial production in Mexico remained strong.

China’s growth has reached its lowest level since the financial crisis. The Reserve Bank of India cut its policy rate by 50bps. Brazil’s central bank also cut its policy rate.

While growth in Mexico is picking up, Turkey’s economy is finally cooling down and also in the Dominican Republic growth is slowing. Meanwhile, Poland’s growth continues to be driven by consumption.

The emerging markets are almost all losing their growth momentum. Even China, which has been the light at the end of the tunnel for a couple of years, is now reducing its growth target to below 8%.
